Which Religion Has It Right About Money?

When we enter the US workforce, we are often taught that religion is a taboo topic. Yet, for many people—especially immigrants from Africa, South Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East—faith is an incredibly important part of their identity. This raises a fascinating question:

Does religion help or hinder our financial growth?

To uncover the answer, I analyzed data originally sourced from Forbes, examining roughly 3,000 global billionaires who collectively hold about $14 trillion in wealth. Using AI tools to help identify birthplace and immigrant status, he sought to discover if these ultra-wealthy individuals share specific religious or cultural values that propel their financial success.

Busting Billionaire Myths

Before diving into the religious beliefs of the world's richest immigrants, the data revealed some surprising facts that bust common wealth myths:

  • Bruce "Batman" Wayne is the Exception: You don't need a life of stoicism and loneliness to get rich. At least 60% of billionaires are married and 60% have children (one billionaire on the list even has 22 kids!). Meanwhile, less than 10% have chosen singleness or are divorced.

  • Wealth is Not for the Young and Famous: Forget the 20-something startup founders; the average age of a billionaire is actually 66 years old. Additionally, the majority of their companies are not household names.

  • There is Room at the Top: Extreme wealth isn't as heavily concentrated as you might think. The very richest billionaires hold less than 5% of all billionaire wealth, and over 70 countries can claim to have at least one billionaire.

The Immigrant Impact

The data also highlights the massive economic contribution of immigrants, challenging the narrative that they take away from the economy. Out of the 813 billionaires who are US citizens, at least 38 identified as immigrants. Globally, the research found that most of the world's billionaire immigrants are coming from India and moving to the US.

Which Religion Comes Out on Top?

When extracting the top 75% of immigrant billionaires by wealth to analyze their belief systems, the findings were split into two distinct categories:

  1. By the sheer number of immigrant billionaires: Hinduism is the most common belief system. This correlates directly with the finding that most immigrant billionaires are of Indian descent.

  2. By total net worth: Christianity appears to be the most common belief system among the wealthiest immigrant billionaires.

What the Numbers Proclaim

If you were hoping that following a certain holy book would magically make you rich, the data busts that myth when we look at immigrant billionaires. The hard truth is that no single religion has a monopoly on building wealth.

However, what we can be certain of is that belief systems such as Hinduism and Christianity appear to foster behaviors and mindsets that are compatible with making lots of money. That was based on my analysis.

Though, if we zoom out to look at billionaires as a whole, the results become actually more pointed. According to Anthropic's Claude,

The best available data suggests billionaires are roughly 55–60% Christian, 30–35% non-religious, 9–10% Jewish (vastly overrepresented relative to their 0.2% global population share), 5–7% Muslim, and 4–5% Hindu.

Most major religions hold proven, centuries-old wisdom and financial keys passed down through generations that remain applicable to building wealth today. Despite this, it seems the Bible has bred abundance on a level worth investigating.

Are your beliefs hindering or helping your personal finances? It might be time to look at the ancient wisdom passed down through the "Good Book" to find out.
